I’ve been waiting a long time to fryhole this cupcake… it is one of my favorite cupcakes ever and it’s definitely worth 5 fries! The Chocolate Sour Cream Cupcake with Chocolate Buttercream cupcake from Teacake Bakery in Emeryville is just to die for. Moist, sweet, choclatey and the icing is light, rich and oh so deelish!!

The cupcake is so moist and flavorful – its so moist that it almost has that dense consistency of flourless cake.. oh, it’s just amazing! Since it is a sour cream cupcake, the chocolate is rich but it has a very subtle hint of the sour cream which I think is what makes it so moise and awesome…

If you haven’t been to Teacake, GO NOW!! I will defnitely be blogging more items from this yummy bakery, I just love it (and I think you will too)! In this case, I think I’m safe to say that the photo speaks louder than words…

Doyle St Cafe: Corned Beef Hash & Cornbread

I went to the Doyle St Cafe in Emeryville last weekend for brunch. I never went there before so I was pretty excited to see what it was all about. First of all, I was freaking starving so I was ready to order something big. This place is in a very cute neighborhood – it’s all modern looking with lofts and stuff – and it’s tucked into a side street that you wouldn’t know is there unless you knew about it already.

When we got there, the place was packed and there were people waiting in line. I was surprised since it seemed like such a quiet street… so we waited for a few minutes before sitting down. Their menu has both breakfast items as well as some brunch and lunch/sandwiches.

Since it was my “St. Patty’s Day” weekend, I decided to go for the corned beef hash and I also ordered a piece of cornbread too. The corned beef hash came with home fries, 2 slices of toast (I ordered wheat but they gave me sourdough), and 2 poached eggs on top.

Here is the dish as it came out to me. It smelled really good and I noticed there were ALOT of potatoes…

Broke the egg yolks and dug in. It was very good. The dish needed a little salt, but overall, it was very good, and I was able to finish all of the corned beef hash section of my plate. The corned beef in the hash was nice and salty with that little bit of tanginess… it was great! I have to say there were just too many potatoes. This is a pretty heavy dish and I really was hungry but even so, I couldn’t finish the home fries.

The cornbread was COLD and VERY DRY. I will not be ordering it again. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt by telling myself that it was warm when it came out and I waited too long to eat it – but NO, this was in the fridge.

All in all, my meal was good. It wasn’t like, to die for, but it wasn’t crappy either. It was good and I will eat at this place again. I would rate this place 3.5 fries, but I can’t so I’ll give it 3.

Teacake Bake Shop: Chocolate Mint Cupcake

This post is long overdue… Teacake Bake Shop is a little cupcake/cookie joint in Emeryville near my house. For a while there, my GF and I found ourselves going there for cupcakes every time we went to Emeryville. They have daily special flavors and the cupcakes are topped off with this amazingly creamy soft rich sweet icing which is totally to die for.

So on this particular day, we were in Teacake (it was around xmas time) and they had the Chocolate Mint cupcake. This is a seasonal flavor, so you can’t really get it so often. Notice the mountain of icing sprinkled with baby chocolate chips! Most of the icings at Teacake are cream cheese/butter cream… just an fyi = amazing.

I’ve had most if not all of the different flavors of cupcakes at Teacake and I will get around to blogging about all of them. This particular cupcake was good. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad. The reason I am not giving it a rave review is because it was kind of dry. I think they bake most of their cupcakes in the morning/early afternoon… and we stopped by on this visit in the evening. The cupcake was not moist anymore… the edges were dry and crumbly and it just didn’t have the sweet moistness that Teacake cupcakes usually have. I’m not going to completely knock it though, as the icing and mini chocolate chips saved the day, and I ended up eating that instead of the cake.
