I recently started a new freelance gig and to celebrate new beginnings we went to Mama’s Royal Cafe for breakfast. This is one of our neighborhood breakfast places… I’ve been eating here now for about 4 years. Now that I’m in my 30s, (if possible) I try to avoid crowds, so we usually go early before the rush, because this place gets busy!

Note, Mama’s is CASH ONLY. They do have an ATM machine there in case you forget cash…

Since we arrived early (about 7:30am), the place was pretty empty so we got a booth, woo hoo! Here’s a tight shot of the room with the booths. There are aprons hanging all over the walls.

When’s the last time you saw a restaurant jukebox? Here you go… they don’t work but they’re nice to look at. People have carved their names and messages in the booths.

I ordered the Combo breakfast which includes 2 buttermilk pancakes, bacon, and an egg (I ordered over-medium). It does not come with toast so I had to order that separate.  The pancakes are freaking awesome. I’m not really the type to order pancakes or waffles or any sweet things for breakfast (unless I’m at Perkin’s bc I love their apricot syrup, lol)…. but I was in the mood for pancakes – and the bacon adds a nice salty touch. You know, a bite of pancakes, a bite of bacon…. until it’s gone.

I love these pancakes and bacon!! The pancakes are light and fluffy and absolutely perfect.

All in all, Mama’s is great for breakfast. I highly recommend their pancakes and bacon, soooo good! Very satisfying.  Just don’t forget to bring cash, and get their early if you don’t want to wait 2309485743w587 minutes in line.

Last Saturday we went to the Mixing Bowl for some quick breakfast.  Generally speaking, I like this place very much, it’s in the neighborhood and I can bring Harley along (you can sit outside with your dog). I ordered the Farmer’s Scramble.  I never had this dish before so I was excited to try something new.  Here’s the blurb from the menu:

farmer’s scramble 9.35
with chard, caramelized onions, bacon, potatoes and cheddar cheese

This is one of those places where you order first and then they give you a number and then you sit down and they bring the food to you.  There was a white barking dog on the patio above the restaurant and some really bad fist pumping techno music blasting out of the windows which was kind of annoying… but the racket seemed to dissipate once the food was delivered and it looked GREAT.

Fryhole | Mixing Bowl: Farmer's Scramble

I was pleasantly surprised with this scramble.  It was extremely flavorful and there was the perfect proportion of egg with the other ingredients (bacon, caramelized onion, chard, potatoes).  The sweetness of the onions went really well with the salty bacon and the chard added a nice extra leafy bite.  The scramble was also nice and hot.  It’s so annoying when you go somewhere for eggs and they come out warm but not hot – not this place.  This whole scramble was nice and super warm/hot not scalding, you could tell it was delivered straight from the kitchen, no warming lamps on this plate!  The scramble even stayed warm through the last bite, I really enjoyed this meal and would definitely order it again!!  It was the perfect amount of food, I left feeling comfortably full.

We went to Pican in Oakland for brunch last weekend. Pican is a fairly new restaurant in downtown oakland, right next to Ozumo on the corner of W. Grand and Broadway. We drive past this place when we go to the Y across the street and it looked good so we went for brunch.

HOLY CRAY to the 5th…. this place is AWESOME. It’s kind of fancy inside but don’t be fooled, you can be as dressy or casual as you want. There were people in jeans (including myself) and people semi-dressed up (after churchers). They were playing Barry White and Aretha Franklin… perfect!

I took one look at the menu and knew instantly what I would order: CHICKEN FRIED BENEDICT. I got a side of bacon too (applewood smoked) and Hav and I split an order of the beignets as a morning appetizer. I’m going to post the photo of the chicken fried benedict first, because I want that image to appear on the homepage…. lol.

NOTE: Bacon was extra… the dish doesn’t come with it, I just put it on the plate to make the plate look fuller. Basically, the dish is called “Chicken Fried Benedict”. It’s fried chicken (boneless) atop an English muffin, with a poached egg on top, covered in hollandaise sauce. They also give you a little side of their house special smokey hot sauce, mmm.

I’m not the hugest benedict person mainly because it’s too wet and mushy, but I decided to try this dish because the idea of juicy fried chicken in the morning sounded perfect. Let me tell you, this dish is AMAZING. Everything about it was awesome – I think the fried chicken really balanced out the soft liquidy/creaminess of the benedict. The hot sauce was also super yummy and it had the perfect ratio of heat to hotness to smokiness. My only suggestion would be to add toast or home fries or something else as a side item because I would’ve liked something to dip in the sauce.

Now check out the beignets:

The beinets were just simply to die for. They are soft and light and have a sweet sugary buttery flavor. The powdered sugar really give them an extra kick. They’re very rich for being so light… soooo good we even took the last one home!

Hav ordered grits with her meal. As much as I love corn, I’ve never really been a huge grits person – but the grits at Pican are seriously so good I would add them to my last meal list. These grits are so buttery and corny – you know what I mean! They have an extra kick of the corn flavor – salty, sweet and buttery corn. I was already stuffed from the chicken benedict and I couldn’t stop myself from eating these grits. I will definitely order a side for myself next time…. and had I known I was going to eat the grits I would’ve taken a photo of the dish without spoonmarks… sorry!

Lastly here’s a photo of my orange juice and latte. What a nice simple presentation!

Pican is A-CLASS… LOVE IT and can’t wait to go back and try something else!

Disco fries all the way baby!

I went to Flames for lunch the other day and immediately was drawn to their daily special – Western Mini Burgers. Yes, yes, I KNOW they’re really called Sliders these days… Aww good ‘ol Flames.  Anyway, I got the order to go.

As you can see, these babies are little greaseballs.  No, that’s not the glare from lights above, it’s shiny griddle grease.  The fries are all fresh cut and Flames only uses Niman Ranch beef (antibiotic free).  The mini burgers came with bbq sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese, an onion ring, and lettuce, tomato and onion.

Now back to the french fries.  As I said before, these are fresh cut.  When I worked in a restaurant back in PA, I learned that you don’t change out the oil in the fryer very often – and that is what gives the fried treats their yummy flavor.  I think Flames changes their oil too much, because the fries (although crispy and chock full of potato) are kind of flavorless.  They taste like potato, but there isn’t anything buttery flavor and the assumed fry-like feeling wasn’t there.  They’re kind of like the fries at In-n-Out… how they taste so fresh cut or something?  Maybe that is my problem… maybe I only like crap fries and haven’t acquired a taste for fresh fries… but I’ve had fresh cut fries before at other places (T-Rex, for example) that were really good, so I think it all goes back to the oil.  Also, the potatoes that they use are small, so almost every french fry has one side that’s full of skin, and I’m not really into that.

…A cross-section of the burger.  It was good, greasy and had just the right amount of bbq sauce and bacon on it.  I usually don’t eat full on hamburgers because they leave you feeling like a big load afterwards, but I was really hungry on this day.

bette's oceanview diner I ate breakfast at Bette’s Oceanview Diner in Berkeley on Thursday. This was my first time eating at Bette’s, as I discovered it one day walking along 4th street. It was surprising how many people were there at 10am on a Thursday – don’t people have jobs?

When you walk into Bette’s there is a giant piece of cherry pie hanging from the ceiling. I am not kidding. It’s an old 50 styles diner with a couner and stools, and booths… white and silver decor. The ambiance is easy going, friendly and casual.

I ended up ordering the classic 2 eggs any style breakfast with homefries and bacon.

I like dippy eggs but I don’t like them all runny like over easy so I ordered them over medium. I have to say they were still a bit too runny for what I consider medium (lots of clear liquid, not cooked through), but nonetheless I ate them.

The homefries were interesting… not really what I was expecting from an old school diner. They were made with red potatoes and were cooked with sauteed onions. I was kind of just expecting simple, chopped up potatoes tossed around with some salt and butter on the griddle, you know, the usual. The homefries were good, I ate all of them, but I would probably skip the onions, and add some butter.

Products made from pigs are some of my favorite things to eat, and I have to say – the bacon at Bette’s Dinner was AWESOME. I got 4 big thick slices cooked perfectly with the perfect ratio of fat/meat/grease… a little crunch near the ends but not enough to crumble. It was awesome.

Lastly, fresh squeezed orange juice is always A+ in my book. I can’t stand over pasturized OJ that is all creamy and thick – gross! The orange juice was definitely fresh, sweet and perfect.

Would I return? Most likely.
