I went to Target today and somehow landed in the cereal aisle.  I’m not really a cereal person btw but I was having an itch for some cereal (or I was just hungry).  Immediately I spotted the Banana Nut Cheerios.  I thought I was dyslexic or something because I stared at the box for a few seconds without it registering that they were indeed Cheerios.  I think I thought they were Honey Bunches of Oats or something, because I kept thinking about how overpoweringly strong and sweet the banana flavor is in that cereal… blah blah blah.  Finally it dawned on me that Cheerios came out with a new flavor and I decided to try them out.

Cheerios have always been a favorite of mine.  I can eat them plain or with a little tiny bit of milk (just enough to get them a little wet, not enough to make them soggy).  Honey Nut is my ultimate favorite, btw.

See the shot of the Banana Nut Cheerios box…

For some reason, I was really excited about trying this cereal.  I think it’s because I was remembering the flavor of regular cheerios – crunchy with that oat flavor – and imagining them with a very subtle hint of banana mixed with an even tinier hint of nut (from the honey nut)…

Well, when I got in the car I ripped open the bag and peeked inside.  I was surprised to see that the cheerios have gotten very skinny! They looked about 1/16″ thinner than normal cheerios – just a tiny sliver skinnier than usual… but enough to notice!

I threw a handful into my fryhole.  Hmm…. they were OK.  They were definitely a little more banana-y than I thought they would be (but not as powerful as Honey Bunches of Oats), and when I looked at the ingredients I noticed that they are also made with corn.  Now, I never remembered regular Cheerios being made with corn… from what I recall, Cheerios are made from whole grain oats.  Now the Banana Nut Cheerios are made with corn?  What the heck?  Here I thought the different Cheerios flavors were all made from whole grain oats with some flavor.  I think it’s the corn that pulls the extra banana sweetness out of these Banana Nut Cheerios… or maybe it’s just cheaper to use corn as a filler?  I admit, I was a little disappointed. …not that corn is bad or anything.

Here’s the bowl of Cheerios that I ate when I got home.  Please notice and agree with me that the Cheerios are slightly skimpier than normal.

Overall, the Banana Nut Cheerios were just ok.  I will eat the rest of the box but I don’t think I’ll be buying them again.  I’ll return to Honey Nut or regular Cheerios. So, I give the Banana Nut variety 2.5 fries… but since I don’t do half-fries I’ll be nice and give them 3.
