fryholeIt’s been 2 years since I’ve posted here, OMG. I’m officially resurrecting Fryhole! If you haven’t been here for a while or if it’s your first visit, I’ve completely redesigned the site. It’s never looked so good!  I’m totally ready to eat my way across the Bay Area, bigger and better than before!

A few changes moving forward…

  • A NEW LOGO, YAY!  The new logo really makes you feel like you’re getting sucked in, doesn’t it?
  • No more ratings – I’m not doing ratings anymore, sorry. Instead, I’ll be featuring my favorite food under “DISCO”, the old equivalent top rating for “disco fries”.
  • New category – GROCERY. Yep, snacks and other delights from the grocery store or other retail places. I’ll include some links to buy them online too if they’re available.
  • Videos – That’s right, I’m going to start posting some videos… fun times!

With sadness in my little heart I must announce that some of the restaurants featured are not longer in business.

Eddie Rickenbacker’s

This place was my favorite bar in downtown SF when I used to work down there. It was a popular hangout for nice people who just wanted a drink and some good American food. Nothing fancy, nothing pretentious about it… that’s why I loved it so much. It was a very special place, best known for all of the motorcycles hanging from the ceiling, tiffany lamps that lined the bar and obese cat named Mr. Higgins.

Zebulon

Another local hangout for me when I used to work downtown. This place was awesome – it had a partial outdoor space and was hidden down an alley.  They had a killer turkey burger and sweet potato fries.

Bombay Ice Cream

I used to freaking LOVE Bombay Ice Cream. I got a scoop every single time I ate somewhere on Valencia. This was back when I first moved to San Francisco in 2004 and lived in the Mission. Bombay Ice Cream was the freaking BOMB. They had all kinds of weird flavors like Cardamon Rose and Black Sesame… true ice cream innovators – loooong before the days of Humphrey Slocombe and BiRite Creamery!

Flames

I used to eat at this place for lunch pretty often with my lunch buddy. We used to call it “Shames” because we felt like lards after we ate there (it was pretty good). They had hand-cut french fries and a bunch of different burgers.

That’s it for now, stay tuned for new posts!

I went to Zebulon a while back for lunch and got the soup de jour – Cream of Corn and a sandwich (Hot Ham & Cheese with Sweet Potato fries).  I love their Cream of Corn soup.

I’m definitely a corn-ie and will rarely refuse anything with corn in it.  The Cream of Corn soup is pureed very finely (there are no whole pieces of corn in it).  They use alot of butter also so it is buttery and corn-y with a smooth n silky texture, yum!  (I actually went to Zebulon two days in a row to get this soup).

The sandwich on the other hand was just good.  Nothing spectacular about it.  My general complaint with most hot sandwiches is that they could be hotter (don’t just toast the bread and broil the cheese down, heat up the meat too, geez!), and this sandwich was no exception.  The sweet potato fries were excellent as usual – sweet, crispy and chock full of yam.  The sweet potato fries are magnet that keeps pulling me back to Zebulon, I could eat them everyday and every night for the rest of my life.

Yesterday I heard that Zebulon had some badass pork and chicken sliders so I went there at 2:50pm for a late lunch only to find out that they cut their full menu at 3pm and only serve burgers and appetizers from then on. Ohhh come on, 10 minutes = no sliders so I ended up ordering a turkey burger instead. I never had a burger at Zebulon so I was pretty excited because they always look so good when I eat there. I was the only person at Zebulon. Eventually another guy came so then there were 2 of us. And it was colder inside than out. BRR.

The turkey burger came with a chipotle mayo and the sweet potato fries are to die for. If nothing else, I would come to Zebulon just to stuff my little fryhole with those sweet potato fries… they are SO GOOD!!

The burger was AMAZING. It was juicy, HUGE and really messy. I think this was the best turkey burger I’ve ever had. And those sweet potato fries were sweet, salty and lightly crunchy on the outside and really soft on the inside.

15 minutes later….
